Commercial Window Film – What It Is and What It Isn’t

By | Commercial Property Owner, News | No Comments

We admit it: the world of commercial window film can be extremely confusing. If you’ve been searching through the Internet trying to come up with a definition for the term commercial window film, you’re probably pretty overwhelmed with the options available.

If you’re ready for some clear and simple explanations, NGS Films and Graphics has got you covered. Here’s your guide to what commercial window film is (and isn’t).

Commercial Window Film 101

In general, commercial window film refers to any type of film that you stick on the windows at your business. In comparison, residential window film refers to the film that you stick on the windows at your home. (We told you we’d make this easy!)

Residential film has a much more limited variety and is typically less technically advanced, which is why some people choose to install commercial window film in their homes.

There are three main types of commercial window film:

1. Security Film

Security window film protects your establishment from break-ins and burglaries by providing a strengthening barrier between would-be thieves and your merchandise.

Security film options include:

  • Off-the-Shelf Film

This is the window film that is readily in stock and available for immediate installation from most resellers. Note that off-the-shelf films vary in quality; some are better than others.

  • Proven Solutions

Proven, proprietary solutions have been specifically created by a security film expert to provide guaranteed, government-rated protection. TRI-SHIELD is one such solution, because it offers a triple-layered defense system that meets ASTM F1233 Level 1.0 anti-intrusion tests to resist attacks from low-powered weapons such as rocks, bricks, and hammers.

Security film is NOT a “bulletproof” solution. Security window film is attached to your existing windows, whereas Invisicade is the next step up: an invisible mounting system for clear, impact-resistant polycarbonate windows. Once mounted, polycarbonate windows provide passive protection from bombs, chemical explosions, hurricanes, tornadoes, and other dangers.

2. Graphics and Signage

Window film graphics and signage provide a critical branding and marketing opportunity for your business. Since each option provides its own advantages, it is important to know the difference between the two.

  • Graphics

Window film graphics conveniently display your brand to the public as they pass by, which helps make your location more memorable. Typically, graphics rely on custom designs and colors that are printed to fit your windows.

  • Signage

Window film also works as signage. Just like your other outdoor signs, window film signage is designed to maximize public attention and identification, which can help increase traffic to your location. Window film signage, however, is different than traditional signage – but NGS has got you covered there too, if you need it!

Film graphics and signage are NOT interior graphics. Interior graphics are images applied to any indoor surface, including your walls, ceilings, floors, and fixtures. Window film graphics and signage are designed to target the people outside your building, whereas interior graphics are designed for the folks who’ve already made it inside.

3. Energy-Efficient Film

Energy-efficient window film provides a wide range of energy-saving options that can help your building retain or block heat to reduce heating and cooling costs. It can also help you cut down on your lighting costs.

There are three main categories of window film:

  • Thermal Film / Low E

Thermal window film, also known as “Low E” film, focuses on heat retention. It’s designed to reduce your heating costs by providing a layer of insulation to all your windows, so you can keep the comfortable warm air in and harsh winter cold out.

  • Solar Film

Solar window film is designed to help you block the unwanted effects of the sun. This includes minimizing heat gain and glare, as well as protecting your merchandise or interior decorations from fading, cracking, and peeling. Solar film can block heat-causing infrared rays by up to 97% and UV rays by 99%.

  • Daylight Redirection Film

Daylight redirection film takes advantage of micro-prisms that are manufactured directly into the film to redirect the sunlight that comes through your windows. By redirecting the light toward your ceiling and further into your space, you can reduce your lighting costs and maximize your energy efficiency.

Solar film is NOT always tinted or mirrored. In fact, solar film comes in a variety of options, including crystal clear. When choosing your solar film, it’s a good idea to sample the many options you have available, so you can make sure you maintain your building’s aesthetic.

There’s a Lot More Than Meets the Eye with Commercial Window Film

As you can see, you have a lot of options when it comes to commercial window film, but we haven’t even made it past the tip of the iceberg on what there is to know. (After all, there’s also all those different brands we need to talk about…)

Honestly, the best way to understand the many, many options available to you is to contact a consultant who can guide you through your choices to help you arrive at the perfect solution.

DINOC & Belbien: The “eco” Architectural Solution

It’s tempting to tear down and start over, but budget and operations considerations can put a damper on demo. With LEED considerations thrown in the mix, improving the appearance of spaces large and small demand a better alternative. Enter DINOC and Belbien architectural laminate—an excellent “eco” alternative.

Architectural laminates are a textured, hefty 8 millimeters thick vinyl and come in more than 400 style variations from wood grain, fabric, and metallic to stucco, stone, and others. Thanks to their high-tech adhesion and flexibility, transforming any smooth surface is possible, even areas with complex curves.

NGS has been using this dynamic, indoor/outdoor material for several years now with great success. One of our largest projects involved refreshing ten thousand square feet within the Dallas Convention Center.

Washington DC jeweler, IGorman, also needed a fresh take on its aging facade. The company selected a wood grain that matched the original. The end results? Both the finish and the final cost were a sight to behold. Said NGS Managing Partner, James Beale, “The store was completely overhauled with a stunning new & modern look for a fraction of the cost of replacing the original facade substrate.”

NGS transforms clear glass into high-def LCD screens

By | Architect or Engineer, Commercial Property Owner, Customers, ESCO, Government, HealthCare, Hospitality, Marketing Agency, News, Property or Facilities Maintenance, Solutions | No Comments

It only looks like magic: NGS transforms clear glass into high-def LCD screens.

With the click of a button — or a tap on your iPhone  — you can change a clear pane of glass into a frosted, privacy barrier. Even more impressive? Turning that clear pane of glass into an LCD screen to show a high definition video. Your audience will be amazed. And why wouldn’t they be? It’s the stuff of the future yet it’s available today thanks to National Glazing Solutions, a true innovation leader in the film and glazing industry.

This next-generation electrochromic film, can be retrofitted on existing glass and is 100% compatible with smart home automation systems. Additionally, it blocks up to 87% of Infrared and up to 98% of  UV rays. Of course you know what that means: heating and cooling bills are reduced. According to the US Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), a building could save up to a whopping 8% of its energy if electrochromic film is used on its windows. Aiding in the cost-savings is the tiny amounts of electricity used to switch windows on and off. For example, 100 windows use approximately the same amount as one incandescent bulb. That’s a very big savings.

So just how does our electrochromic film work? A quick talk with one of our engineers will tell you electrochromic film is like building a sandwich of sorts. It’s constructed like this: On the inside surface — which points into the building — is a glaze of five super thin layers of chemicals. In the middle is a separator, which has two electrodes on each side. On top of those are electrical contacts. When a tiny charge is applied, ions travel from the separator to outer electrodes and reflect light to create the frosted appearance.

Now, if you want to know how we transform clear glass into a video display, well, that will take a lot longer than we have here. But still, it’s really cool, right?

Office space design trends that keep worker bees buzzing

Office space design trends that keep worker bees buzzing

The right office environment matters more than ever as Millennials stream into the workforce.  Great spaces attract the best employees and keep them happy and productive.

Window films & NGS printed graphics are a cost-effective tool in providing the warm fuzzies today’s employees need to bring cold, hard cash to the bottom line.  See how window films can keep you current with these five trends.

  1. Open up

Open spaces, at work and at home, have been a trend for so long that they have really become the standard. Let in as much natural light as possible into your open spaces and consider removing any walls that block it. You can “control” the light by choosing different window films that let in more or less light depending on what you need where.

  1. Make yourself at home

Offices are starting to feel more like you’re in someone’s house. The drab rows of desks and columns of metal filing cabinets are slowly fading from view. To make your space feel more like a house, add family-style furniture like long farm tables with benches.  Keep the flow flexible, so tables and chairs can be moved around as needed.

  1. Get in touch with your feelings

(The tactile kind.) Adding texture adds warmth, dimension and personality, especially in open spaces with a homey atmosphere. Get ideas for mixing and matching textures from interior design blogs and magazines. Take a stroll over to the NGS gallery to see the hundreds of different projects utilizing custom and off the shelf decorative & printed films.

  1. Turn it inside out… and outside in

The outside is coming into the office through open spaces and natural light. But the trend doesn’t stop there. Natural stones and woods are appearing on floors, counter tops and walls. Subtle floral patterns are growing in upholstery and wallpaper. If flowers aren’t your thing, don’t worry. Modern approaches suggest woodsy surroundings without overpowering the flower-phobic. Products like 3M’s DINOC and Belbien can be installed on most any smooth surface to emulate the look of stone or, metal or wood.

  1. Don’t keep up with the Jones’s

Keeping up with office space design trends keeps you looking fresh and welcoming to both your employees and your important visitors. But don’t forget that your space should always reflect your brand, even as tastes change. With today’s specialty graphics, brand identify elements printed on film can be incorporated liberally—and tastefully—into a less “corporate” environment.

Why No Building Should Be Without Sunscreen

By | Architect or Engineer, Commercial Property Owner, Customers, Education, Energy modeling, ESCO, General contractor, Government, HealthCare, Hospitality, News, Property or Facilities Maintenance, Solar control Films, Solutions | No Comments

Why No Building Should Be Without Sunscreen

If you’re unwittingly letting your building fry like a lobster, that’s your business. Slathering it up with sun protection is ours. Here’s why it matters. According to the International Window Film Association (IWFA), window film can stop more than 80% of the solar energy coming through windows, with up to a 30% reduction in cooling costs and some films up to 30% reduction in heat loss in the winter.. The IWFA notes that window film can even save seven times each dollar spent on replacement windows.

More than 250 window films have even been certified by the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) for energy efficiency. (“Fenestration” means an opening in a building—basically, windows, doors and skylights). The NFRC is the same independent, nonprofit organization that rates glass windows. Ratings take into account factors including energy absorption, solar heat gain, air leakage and resistance to condensation.

As if energy savings weren’t a good enough reason for solar-savvy window film, this “sunscreen” also means:

  • UV protection for the people inside
  • Fewer hot spots
  • Less glare
  • Reduced fading of furniture, carpeting and artworks

According to James Beale, managing partner and vice president of sales for NGS, “Solar considerations have emerged as a major factor for our clients in weighing their window film options. Energy costs and ways to mitigate them should really be on every client’s window solution check list.”

Beale also pointed out that many clients have been taking their solar solutions to the next level with specialty solar-control window films in a variety of categories. These include traditional reflective, ceramic ultra-blocking, and spectrally select for preserving the highest degree of natural daylight.

NGS installs 3M security film for an international developer’s marquis property in Atlanta

NGS installs 3M security film for an international developer’s marquis property in Atlanta

So who’s the developer, and what’s the property? We’d tell you, but we’d have to kill you. As a leader in the commercial window film industry, NGS takes security seriously, and we stand behind the abilities of 3M security film.

According to the latest crime reporting available from the FBI, more than two million burglaries took place in homes and offices in 2009, costing nearly five billion dollars in lost property. Sixty percent of the burglaries in 2009 involved forcible entry. Between the year 2000 and 2009, burglaries increased more than seven percent.

According to James Beale, managing partner and vice president of sales for NGS, “Smash-and-grabs are of increasing concern among our clients across the U.S., and not just in major cities. We’re working with businesses of every size on solutions.”

The recently completed Atlanta security installation is 22,000 square feet, and the scopes include a custom integration of 3M SH14 interior security film and 3M IPA/ Impact Protection Adhesive wet glaze attachment, plus 3M 7mil exterior security film for force entry protection. Strong, micro-layered safety and security window films from 3M are designed to hold glass together in the event of a break, while allowing natural light to pass through and maintaining the appearance of an office. An added bonus is energy conservation and lower energy bills.

“Security considerations should really be a component of any commercial window film solution,” Beale said. “It’s like the insurance you’d get for your car and your home as a matter of course. A little forethought and a small investment in window ‘insurance’ can save untold expenses should there be a break-in.”

NGS is currenlty working with property managers and retailer around the US to install proven forced entry protection systems like TRI-SHIELD.

Aaron’s Rents Makes a Bold Move—and NGS Goes with Them

Aaron’s Rents is one of the largest rent-to-own retailers in the country, with more than 2,000 stores in 47 U.S. states and Canada. The furniture, electronics and appliances giant recently made the forward-looking decision to move from its headquarters of 55 years in the Atlanta Buckhead neighborhood to new headquarters in the Cobb Galleria.

Although the move is a pioneering one, Aaron’s won’t be alone. Many other companies based in Atlanta have considered re-locating from in-town neighborhoods to the Cobb Galleria due to sky-rocketing rents and worsening traffic. The Home Depot has already made the transition. These companies look to a better quality of life for employees with the development of the Braves SunTrust Park in Cobb county, which will be part of a new walkable, work-live-play community.

National Glazing Solutions was selected to provide the interiors package for Aaron’s Rents upgraded headquarters based on its strong track record of delivering outstanding solutions and services for new-fashioned HQ projects, including State Farm Insurance Co.

NGS project scopes at the new Aaron’s Rents headquarters include digitally printed wallcoverings, custom printed window films, dimensional signage, wayfinding graphics and Belbien wood-grain vinyl.

Wood-grain looks, in particular, have surged in popularity in 2016. According to managing partner and vice president of sales for NGS, “What’s old is new again. Wood-grain vinyl adds warmth and contrast to a modern office environment in a cost-effective, practical application that is both durable and easy to maintain.”

NGS Gives New State Farm Mega Campus Major Atmosphere

In a prime example of “go big or go home,” State Farm Insurance Co. is building the largest corporate office project in Atlanta’s history, located on 17 acres in the Perimeter area of Dunwoody. Currently planned for completion by the end of the year, the Park Center campus will span an impressive 2.2 million square feet, including a 26-story tower connected to the Dunwoody MARTA station. The campus will be home to up to 10,000 employees.

National Glazing Solutions was selected by State Farm’s architect & general contractor to handle the interior graphics and film for this massive undertaking. Recognized as the leader in the commercial window film industry, NGS has the chops to bring an innovative vision for large scale interior graphics to life.

According to James Beale, managing partner and vice president of sales for NGS, “Large-scale interior graphics have been a huge trend in 2016. It gives companies like State Farm the most robust opportunity to truly customize their space as an environmental reflection of their brand.”

NGS project scopes at the State Farm Park Center include digitally printed wall coverings, 3M Fasara dusted crystal window film, custom printed window films, dimensional signage and wayfinding graphics. The 3M dusted crystal window film is a decorative glass film that allows for custom levels of privacy and transforms the look of clear glass while letting in light and maintaining an open feel. Dimensional signage and wayfinding graphics that are intuitive and effective are particularly important for a seamless experience throughout an office of this scale.
